What’s Involved in Large-Scale Turf Prep (Without the Mowing)

turf preparation

Installing turf on a large site isn’t just a matter of rolling out some grass and hoping for the best. You might be looking to grass a school oval, commercial property or rural acreage, so it’s important to know that large-scale turf preparation is about groundwork, not gardening. How you prepare the ground makes all the difference in how well your turf performs long term.

At Greener Landscaping, we handle the civil and soil prep work that gives new turf the best possible start — and then leave the mowing to someone else.

Here’s what turf preparation actually involves, and why it’s a critical step (even if you’ll never push a mower over it yourself).

What’s Involved in Large-Scale Turf Preparation?

Turf prep is about setting up the base. Make no mistake. Get it wrong and it can cause drainage issues, dead patches, or turf that never fully establishes.

Here’s what we typically do before any turf is laid:

  • Clear and level the ground: remove debris, rocks, and existing vegetation
  • Regrade for drainage: ensure water flows away from buildings and doesn’t pool
  • Condition the soil: add topsoil, sand, compost or gypsum to suit turf type and site conditions
  • Compact and laser-level the site: to prevent uneven settlement
  • Install sub-base if needed: for highly trafficked or poor soil areas

This isn’t lawn care. It’s landscape construction. And when done properly, it makes laying turf faster, easier, and far more successful.

Where It Works Best

We handle turf prep for:

  • Acreage homes and rural blocks
  • School ovals and sports fields
  • Commercial lawns or verge areas
  • Parks, developments, and large-scale gardens

Then we lay the turf (unless you particularly want your maintenance landscaper to do it). We’re not the crew that comes back every fortnight with a mower. We’re the team that makes sure the turf doesn’t fail in the first place.

Why We Don’t Do Mowing

Because mowing isn’t our thing — and that’s intentional.

Our strength is in earthworks, soil conditioning, and site prep. That’s where the results come from. Turf prep is civil work, not garden maintenance, and it needs a different skill set, machinery, and attention to detail.

We partner with landscapers, turf layers, and even property owners who want a properly prepared base that sets them up for success — without chasing us down to trim the edges.
